Alice S. Freed, 91, of Quakertown, died April 7 at Telford Lutheran Community. She was the wife of W. Kenneth Freed. They had been married 70 years. Born in Trumbauersville, she was the daughter of the late Harvey Sell and Sarah Rotenberger Strunk Sell. Alice was a life-long member of Christ U.C.C. Church in Trumbauersville. She served as a Girl Scout leader both in Trumbauersville and East Greenville. A 1938 graduate of Quakertown High School, she attended West Chester State Teacher's College and earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Kutztown University. Her first years of teaching were in one-room schools with eight grades in Richland and East Rockhill townships. Throughout her 30-year teaching career, she taught in elementary and junior high school, retiring in 1983 from Quakertown Elementary School. During her years of teaching, she was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. In 1970-71, Alice received the Quakertown Lions Club Blind Service Award. In 1975, she was awarded the Gold Key for meritorious service by the Quakertown Community High School's Alumni Association. Her husband, Kenneth, 90, died February 5, 2011, at Telford Lutheran Community. Born in Weisel, he was the son of the late Ildah M. Trauch Fluck. Baptized, confirmed, and married at St. Matthew's, Kellers Church, he later became a member of Christ U.C.C. Church in Trumbauersville, serving as a Deacon and Elder at various times. A 1938 graduate of Quakertown High School, he served in the U.S. Navy, in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, teaching anti-submarine warfare to both U.S. and foreign navy personnel. After World War II, he owned and operated Freed's Atlantic gas station and Freed's Firestone store in East Greenville. In 1958, with Alice, he built and operated Quaker Lanes, Quakertown's first automated bowling lanes. Later he attended the New York Institute of Finance and worked as a financial consultant and stockbroker. Both Alice and Kenneth earned their pilot's licenses and spent many hours in the air with their children. Alice and Kenneth are survived by a daughter, Dr. Sandra Mather, of Avondale, PA, and a son, W. Kenneth Freed, Jr., of Rehoboth, MA; two granddaughters, Kristen Freed of Chatham, MA, and Kim Neuffer of Newton, NJ; and two great-grandchildren, Emily and Matthew Neuffer. A joint memorial service for both Alice and Kenneth is planned for 11:00, Saturday, April 28, at Christ U.C.C. Church, 101 North Main Street, in Trumbauersville. Friends may call between 10:00 and11:00 that day. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ U.C.C. Church. Service Information A service summary is not available
