Richard A. Davis

October 19, 1926 — May 5, 2017

Grantham, N.H.Richard A. (Dick) Davis, of Grantham and Ponce Inlet, FL, and formerly of Quakertown, PA, beloved husband of the late Patricia A. Davis, passed away Friday May 5, 2017 at his home in Grantham, N.H., after a full and well-lived life. Dick was born and spent most of his life in Quakertown. He was a graduate of Quakertown High School, Class of 1944. Dick was an excellent athlete, excelling in baseball and basketball in high school and earning multiple all-league honors. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies and was offered college athletic scholarships and a minor league baseball contract, but instead decided to join the armed forces during the latter part of World War II. He was elected a member of the Quakertown-Pennridge Sports Hall of Fame. Following his high school graduation, Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as the radioman in an antisubmarine aircraft patrolling the Atlantic coast. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946, and returned home (hitchhiking across the country to save money) to start his own business. In 1949, Dick married his high school sweetheart, Patricia (Henry) Davis. Dick and Pat enjoyed 66 years of marriage together, until Pat passed away in 2015. After returning from the service, Dick studied accounting in Philadelphia, and built his own successful tax accounting, insurance and investment business. He and Pat worked together in the business, providing financial services and advice to many small businesses and families in the Quakertown area. He was an early investor in mutual funds, municipal bonds and bank stocks. Dick was also active in local civic affairs, serving for many years on the Quakertown Community School District School Board, including as president, and was a member of the Jaycees and the American Legion. Dick and Pat lived fully, enjoyed an active social life, and did considerable travel with family and friends, including trips to many National Parks, the Rocky Mountains, Alaska, Hawaii, Bermuda and various parts of Europe. He was an avid golfer and tennis player, enjoying golfing trips to Scotland, Florida, California and throughout the Northeast. Dick and Pat won various local tennis tournaments, and he was a golfing legend at his home course, the Eastman Golf Links, where he won numerous tournaments and shot his age or better many times. Dick and Pat took up skiing in their late 40s, and enjoyed family ski trips to Colorado, Utah and Switzerland. Following their retirement in 1990, Dick and Pat moved to Eastman in Grantham, NH, and spent winters at their condo in Ponce Inlet, FL. Dick was a good father, husband, friend, leader, and businessman, a kind hearted and thoughtful man beneath his tough exterior, and was loved and admired by many who knew him. He was active and energetic throughout his life, and had a positive, can do attitude and a wry sense of humor. He continued to golf, play tennis and split wood until shortly before his death. Dick was very proud of his three children and their accomplishments. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Dick is survived by his two sons, Christopher P. Davis of Hamilton, MA, and Peter E. Davis and his wife, Janet of Quakertown, PA, and his daughter, Jill D. Davis of Grantham, NH; two grandchildren, Gregory C. Davis and his wife Lucy of San Francisco, CA and Colin S. Davis of Hamilton, MA, one great granddaughter, Lila Davis of San Francisco; and six nieces and nephews. He was the son of James M. and Anna Davis.
