John M. Smakula, of Perkasie, died March 22, 2009 in his home. He was 88. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Michael and Sophia (Kotko) Smakula. Prior to his retirement, John worked as a machinist for the former Andale Corporation of Lansdale. John was an active member of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Bethlehem. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening and mowing his lawn. A quiet man, he will be remembered as a caring individual who never hesitated to lend a helping hand to those in need. He is survived by two brothers - Wasley and his wife Margaret, and Harold; four sisters - Mary Walters, Laura Smakula, Theresa Nalepa and Julia Detweiler and her husband Lester; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Florence. A burial service will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. in St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church 980 Bridle Path Rd. Bethlehem, Pa. 18017 Call 9:30-10:30 A.M. Thursday in the church. Interment will be at the Union Cemetery of Hellertown. The C. R. Strunk Funeral Home, Inc.
