Helga E. H. Lampson

Helga E. H. Lampson (nee Hegg) was born on Dec. 4, 1912, in Bruce, SD. She died on July 23, 2011 at Phoebe Richland Health Care Center in Richlandtown, PA. One of seven siblings, Helga grew up on a farm outside of Brookings, SD. She attended country (one room) school and graduated from Brookings H.S. in 1932. After graduation she worked as a secretary and comptometer operator in Minneapolis, MN and Washington, D.C. ( A comptometer was the first commercially successful key-driven mechanical calculator.) Helga joined the Women's Army Corps during WWII; she completed her basic training in Roswell, NM and was stationed in Germany at the close of the war. After the war she returned home to SD, where she met husband George P. Lampson at an Armory dance in Brookings. They were married on Sept. 7, 1948. Upon completion of George's M.S. degree, they moved east, first to N. J. and finally settling in Hilltown, Bucks Co., PA. Helga was a life-long Lutheran and regular church-goer. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader (and member of Pierce Library's Great Books Club). Active in local politics, she served as a Republican committeewoman for several years. Helga's favorite role was that of homemaker. She loved being a wife and mother and was a fabulous cook and baker. (Her children especially remember her amazing homemade bread, pies, doughnuts, and Scandinavian Christmas cookies.) Helga was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by daughter Terry Hughley and son-in-law William Hughley, twin sons William and Bert, daughter-in-law Susan Lampson, and granddaughters Emma, Ila, and Ellie. Interment will be held at 9:30 A.M. Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Hilltown/St. Peter's Union Cemetery, Hilltown Pike, Hilltown, PA followed by a memorial service at 11:00 A.M. in the C. R. Strunk Funeral Home, Inc. (www.crstrunk.com) 821 W. Broad St. Quakertown. Call 10:30-11:00 A.M. in the funeral home.
