Esther Naomi Thomas Meyers 94, of Trumbauersville, passed away peacefully on Thursday September 22, 2016. Born on June 5, 1922, she grew up in Trumbauersville in the last house on South Main Street. Her mother passed away when she was only five years old. Because of this, the teacher allowed her to go to school a year early with her older sister, Mary, so that she didnt have to be home alone. Trumbauersville had a four-room school house at the time and Eugene Ortt was in her class. About a year after her mothers death, Esthers father married Elsie Bossert and she brought a new stepbrother, Ernie, into the family. Esthers father was a carpenter, and so was his father-in-law, and together they built a new house by hand for this new family during the Depression! They even had to bring in a horse to help dig out the cellar. The new house was only a few houses up from the old house. Esther didnt really like the new house because her stepmother always made her and Mary work, but she was always so happy when her father would come home from work. He was full of joy and used to dance around in the kitchen. Esthers stepmother did apologize to her and Mary when they were teenagers for how hard she made them work when they were younger, and they all became good friends after that. Esthers first job was at the drug store in Trumbauersville for Bill & Gertie Shup. The drug store was in the same building as Spors is in now. She used to wait on people at the counter and served them ice cream. She also worked at the drug store in Quakertown when she was in high school. On Fridays, she worked there during her lunch break at school, running back and forth the whole way! Esther always loved to have fun with friends; in her teenage years they would literally have dances in peoples barns. Esther, her sister, Mary, and their friends, Evelyn and Betty Ortt would walk all the way from Trumbauersville to Quakertown to go to the movies! Esther especially liked Robert Taylor and John Wayne! After high school, Esther worked at the Regent Coat Factory, putting markings on fabric that told the sewers where to sew buttons and zippers. She also worked at a clothing factory on Belmont Avenue running a machine that printed labels. It was that job which led to meeting her husband, Howard Meyers. He worked at that same clothing factory and when he saw Esther for the first time, he said to his co-workers, "You see that chick down there? Im going to marry her someday," and he did! She didnt even know him at the time he began saying that! He always liked to call her a "chick!" Eventually Howard became the Union Representative for the company and Esther met him when she was 32 years old. They met in 1955 and were married the same year on April 29th. Together, they loved to travel, especially to Canada to visit Howards son, Bill and his wife. They also enjoyed playing golf, although Esther liked it more than Howard, and they used to play with Ken & Alice Freed. When Howard wasnt up to traveling and then after he died (in March 2000), Esther travelled with her niece, Beverly Trumbauer. They went to almost every state together. Esther especially loved the Grand Canyon and the Bad Lands. They also went to the Canadian Rockies and took a raft ride! Esther loved going to New York City to see Broadway shows and also to the casinos in Atlantic City; she even won $600 once! One place she always wanted to visit, but never did, was Paris cest la vie! She also enjoyed reading romance and mystery novels, watching Golf (Tiger Woods was her favorite), Seinfeld and All in the Family on TV. In closing, when asked the secret to a long, happy life, Esther responded, "Always read a good book and have at least one beer a day!" Esther was predeceased by her sister Mary Trumbauer, her brother in law Russell Trumbauer, and step brother Ernest Bossert. Services are private at the convenience of the family. Obituary was prepared by excerpts from the biography Hilary Trainer wrote about Esther in September 2011. Service Information Private Services
