Eleonore Raum

July 1, 1920 — April 30, 2016

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the death of Eleonore Raum on April 30 at Sage Point Senior Care in LaPlata, Maryland, where she had resided for the past few months. She will be laid to rest with graveside services on Monday, May 9, 2016, 10:00 A.M. in the cemetery at Trinity Great Swamp United Church of Christ in Spinnerstown, Pennsylvania, next to the grave of her late husband, John Leonard Raum, who died in 2000. She is survived by two children, Hans Raum of Cornwall, Vermont and Linda Moore of Waldorf, Maryland and by four grandchildren, Charles Moore and his wife Orla, of Plymouth, Michigan; Adam Moore and his wife Erin, of Alamosa, Colorado; Andrew Moore and his wife Charlene, of Litchfield, Maine; and Rachel Moore Martin and her husband, Brian, of Oak Ridge, North Carolina. Eleonore was born in Philadelphia in 1920, the oldest child and only daughter of Walter and Freda Schmidt. She spent most of her younger years being raised by foster parents and then by her aunt and uncle, John and Marie Peterson, who lived in Tuckahoe, New Jersey. Her brother Albert was born in 1923 and died in 1977. Her half-brother, Henry Bandmann, was born in 1929 and died in 2009. Eleonore married John Leonard Raum on July 9, 1938 at Kreuz Kirche Lutheran Church in Philadelphia. Their son Hans was born in July 1940 and their daughter Linda was born in April 1945. The family spent many happy times together at their summer cabin on the Rancocas Creek in Hainesport, New Jersey. Eleonore was a steadfastly loving wife, mother and grandmother. She made friends easily and nurtured her appreciation of nature by attending evening nature classes and taking class field trips for many years. Her spiritual values were molded by her Catholic foster parents, the Methodist Church in Tuckahoe, NJ, where she sang in the choir, the Lutheran Churches where she was active in the young peoples league and the Missionary Society, the Congregational Church in Spinnerstown, close to her home in Coopersburg, and finally by her Mennonite ancestors. The many varied influences on her life helped her to care about and accept everyone. Her positive outlook and forgiving nature made her a blessing to those who knew her during some of her 95 years on earth. May she rest in peace and rise in glory!
